This easy and delicious gluten free red onion gravy is a brilliant sauce for roasts, sausage and mash, toad in the hole and more. With a rich sauce and soft, sweet red onions, it’s simple to make and will complete your meal beautifully.
Making gluten free gravy is very similar in method to make standard gravy, you simply need to use gluten free plan flour (I use the FREEE by Doves Farm Plain Flour) or corn flour (corn starch) in place of wheat flour. This acts as a thickening agent in the gravy to ensure you have a nice thick gravy rather than a watery juice.
Tips For Success
Take the time to soften the onions right down, as their sweet flavour will really develop and you’ll get a little note of caramelisation. If you are in a hurry, popping a lid onto the pan while the onions cook can speed this up, letting the onions sweat in the steam producing while they are cooking.
My second tip is to ensure you mix the corn flour (or other flour) with water before adding to the gravy, to get a nice smooth slurry mixture. Then to keep mixing well while the gravy is thickening. This will ensure you don’t get any flour clumps or lumpy gravy.

Gluten Free Red Onion Gravy
Gorgeous, rich red onion gravy. Perfect as a sauce for sausage and mash, toad in the hole and roast dinners. Gluten free, but suitable for everyone.
Ingredients
For the onion gravy
- 2 red onions
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- Knob of butter (about 15g)
- 1 tsp dried thyme/4 sprigs fresh thyme, finely chopped
- 200ml red wine
- 1 tsp balsamic vinegar
- 300ml chicken or beef stock
- 1 tbsp Henderson's relish or gluten free Worcestershire Sauce (optional)
- 1 tbsp cornflour
Instructions
- Finely slice the onions and add them to a high-sided frying pan with the thyme, butter and olive oil. Cook on a medium-low heat for 15 minutes, stirring regularly, until really soft - sometimes I pop a lid on the pan, as this allows the onions to sweat and become extra soft, but this isn't essential.
- Next add the red wine and balsamic vinegar to the pan, turn up to medium high and allow to reduce for 5 minutes.
- Pour in the hot stock and Henderson's relish and season to taste with salt and pepper. Cook for 5 minutes.
- In a small ramekin or dish, mix the cornflour with a little water to form a smooth slurry. Add this to the gravy pan and stir through immediately. Cook for a final 5 minutes, stirring constantly, and the gravy will become nice and thick.
- Decant into a warmed jug and then serve alongside your meal.
Notes
If you do not have corn flour, you can use gluten free plain flour to thicken the gravy.
